Last week, Hurricane Idalia did some significant damage to certain areas in Northeast Florida but not as much damage as the Bradford Tornadoes. On Saturday, September 2, 2023 they faced the Baldwin Indians for the JEAG Sports week 2 game of the week. It started out like a highly competitive defensive game until junior Branden Williams recovered a muffed punt by Baldwin in the end zone for a touchdown. With the defense doing what it does best, the Tornadoes extended their lead to 12-0 with a goal line rushing touchdown by Jeremiah McKenzie. Things didn’t get better for the Indians’ offense as they had another possession that resulted in a turnover. This time it was a tipped pass by JEAG Sports top player Torin Brazell that landed right into the hands of senior defensive tackle Jorden Daniels, which was returned for a touchdown. The Bradford Tornadoes ended the half with a 20-0 lead and no intentions of looking back.

Dae’Jon Shanks added more points to the scoreboard on another goal line run for the Bradford Tornadoes in the third quarter. Playing like one of the best teams in Northeast Florida, its performances like this that can prepare a team for the postseason. Holding Baldwin to just under 50 yards of total offense, this was yet another shutout for this extremely talented Bradford defense. Bradford ended this one with a final score of 40-6. Some key players for Bradford were JEAG Sports top players, Chalil Cummings who gained over 70 receiving yards on 3 catches and Willie Pollard carrying the ball 17 times and falling 11 yards short of another 100 yard game.

Although this was a tough loss for the Baldwin Indians, some of their key players managed to stand out as well. Senior Linebacker Octavious Barnes was swarming all over the field as he made 15 total tackles with 13 being solos and 1 tackle for loss. It was the athletic ability of JEAG Sports top player Leon Kirkland that put points on the board for the Indians as he returned a blocked punt for their only touchdown. Kirkland also had 5 tackles (4 solo) and 1 tackle for loss. This week Baldwin will host Fernandina Beach while Bradford visits Middleburg for their week 3 showdown. Both programs still have a long way to go and this season is just getting started. It will be exciting to see how things play out for both of these talented squads.
