The 2022 football regular season has past and spring football is here. There were quite a few highly anticipated match-ups this week featuring some teams that are eager to show their off season progressions. Thursday, May 18th the Trojans of Ribault high school hosted the Fernandina Beach Pirates. Ribault, coming off of a 3-7 2022 season, wasted absolutely no time getting on the board as running back Jayshaun Wanton blasted through the line of scrimmage and went off to the races for an 80 yard touchdown on the very first play of the game. For the point after, Quarterback Timothy Cole converts the 2 point try with a strike to Jaylen Houston. The Trojans were able to put up 16 points in the first half. Their second score came from a Timothy Cole touchdown pass to wide receiver Jahrod Shaw. This would be the first of 2 touchdowns on the night for this young playmaker. Shaw will be a senior at the start of the 2023 season and he is a player that the Trojan coaching staff speaks highly of. “He is a disciplined young man that runs great routes. Over the years he has had to wait his turn to see the field and is hungry to showcase his skill set”, said Head Coach Aaron Pinckney when asked about Shaw. In the second half, Ribault created more separation from the Pirates as they made their way to the end zone 3 more times. Quarterback Timothy Cole completed another touchdown pass, this time to Jeremiah Thomas. Jahrod Shaw got into the end zone for the second time, this time as a ball carrier. The final touchdown came from the Trojans’ grudging defense as Defensive back Caleb Thomas intercepted a pass and returned it for the only defensive score of the night. The Ribault Trojans finished the game with a 34-0 victory over Fernandina Beach. Although Fernandina Beach struggled for most of this game, there are still some things to look forward to for the 2023 season. The Pirates forced a Trojan turnover as 6 ‘2 veteran Linebacker, Joshua Modupe was able to drop back in coverage to intercept a pass over the middle. As for the Trojans, they have quite a few talented players on the team. One of the main players to watch is veteran Lineman and team captain, Jordan Matthews. Matthews is another player on this team that Coach Pinckney has high regard for. “He is a great leader, an intelligent young man with a 3.9 grade point average and a monster on the field”, said Coach Pinckney in regards to Jordan Matthews. With their confidence overflowing now, this game should be a great example of what to expect from the Trojans in the 2023 season.
