From the end of the 2021 season to the start of the 2022 season when it came to Middleburg high school football, the first name that always came to mind was senior running back and 2022 Times Union Super 11 selection Mike Mitchell. All the while, the Broncos had a secret weapon just waiting to burst his way onto the scene. He is a senior running back that stands at 5 ’11, 185 pounds and when he runs between the tackles, it looks as though he is shot out of a cannon. His name is TJ Lane. His herculean lower body strength is one of the major factors that allowed him to have the type of success that he had throughout the 2022 season. In the eye of the bright Friday night lights, Lane displayed the “Next man up” mentality and did not hesitate to show his coaches, teammates and everyone else in Northeast Florida that he had no problem adjusting to the heavier workload after the loss of Mike Mitchell. Lane’s senior campaign consists of playing all 10 regular season games and rushing for 1,786 yards on 192 carries. He also crossed the threshold of the end zone 16 times while gaining 9.3 yards per carry. His most remarkable performance this season came against the Orange Park Raiders where he had 24 carries for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns. Lane also had 7 games this season where he rushed for more than 100 yards on the day. For the season finale against the Fernandina Beach Pirates, T.J. Lane put on a show and once again he did not disappoint. His final performance was one for the ages as he was able once again take on a heavy workload by carrying the ball 38 times for 321 yards and he also had another 4 touchdown game. Even Though this gem of a running appeared to often be slept on, he was still recognized as one of the best players in the state of Florida and earned himself a spot on the 2022 Jaguars Prep and Actions Sports Jax All-Prep top 25 team. There are quite a few good running backs coming out of this senior class of 2023. With this level of performances displayed by TJ Lane, it’s more than right that someone add another name to that elite list of backs for the 2022 season. Football, like any other sport, is an art. At the start of this season, Lane had what some would possibly call a blank canvas. Now that the work is done, it’s time for this rising star to step back and allow others to admire his masterpiece. In one extraordinary season of hard work, Lane was able to capture the attention and sign an official letter of intent to the University of West Florida. It may not be an easy road ahead but with the right coaching methods, it won’t be long before we are reading and hearing about how bright of a star this kid is at the next level.
